Generative AI is making the past increasingly visible. This does not result in historical documents, but rather in statistically plausible images that fill gaps in the archives with fictional scenes. In this column from the DSI Insights series, Roland Meyer, DIZH Bridge Professor at UZH and ZHdK, uses several examples to show how these synthetic images are shifting our relationship with history and why they reveal more about our present than about the past they are meant to depict.
