How can green spaces be analysed in a way that specifically improves the well-being of the population? Charlotte Sertic is conducting research on this topic as part of Flagship Project 3 at the Public Data Lab. She combines Street View images, aerial photographs and satellite data with deep learning to develop a map of socially and ecologically valuable green spaces in the canton of Zurich.
In this interview, she discusses, amongst other things, the technical challenge of modelling something as subjective as well-being.
"On one side, there is the data-driven work of mapping and analysing green spaces. On the other side, we are trying to model something deeply subjective: How do people actually experience these spaces and what do they mean for their wellbeing?"
