The National Research Program Digital Transformation (NRP 77) has presented its final report after eight years. Abraham Bernstein, former Chair of the NRP 77 Steering Committee and a member of the DIZH Management Board, offers a sober assessment of the world of work. In an interview with UZH Magazine, he emphasises that AI boosts productivity but does not simply displace people from their jobs.
Instead of blind trust in AI systems, what is needed is “appropriate reliance” – a situation-appropriate assessment of when and to what extent one can rely on AI. As AI systems are based on statistical methods and are prone to error, a societal culture of error is also necessary, with clear lines of responsibility and the opportunity to raise objections. For him, one of the most fascinating questions is how we intend to shape our collaboration with machines in the future.
