The Question of the Just City

How fair is Zurich’s housing market? Who is responsible for ensuring that urban development is shaped in a socially and environmentally responsible way?

In an interview with Public Data Lab, Hanna Hilbrandt, Professor of Social Geography at UZH, talks about her research into displacement, the housing market and socio-ecological conflicts of interest. In the project “The Responsible City”, she and her team examine how such conflicts are negotiated in Zurich and Geneva, and what role politics, planning, the property industry and civil society play in this. She explains what data can reveal about inequalities in Zurich’s housing market, and how qualitative and quantitative data can be brought together.
