Fake news, AI and the credibility of journalism

False information and conspiracy theories are spreading rapidly. To counteract this, the Swiss Young Academy has published a position paper. It is based on assessments by experts from academia and media practice and contains specific recommendations on how to deal with fake news.

On SRF 2 radio, Dr. Sabrina Kessler, communication scientist at UZH and spokesperson for the Swiss Young Academy, talks about the causes, identifying features and counter-strategies for disinformation. She explains how news can be checked for truthfulness and why an informed public is central to democracy.

Dr. Sabrina Kessler is a member of DSI Community Communication and is involved in the project “Digital Resilience: Tool for AI and deepfake skill amoung young people”, which is being funded in the 3rd Rapid Action Call. The tool teaches young people (aged 12 to 16) skills in the field of AI and digital media in an interactive way. At the launch event on June 24, 2025, the current state of research on the promotion of AI skills will be presented and the tool will be demonstrated for use in the classroom in particular.
