“Being a spider” – virtual reality as a space for experience

In the interactive VR experience “Being a spider”, visitors slip into the role of a four-spotted spider and go insect hunting at night. They sense air currents with highly sensitive sensory hairs and perceive the finest vibrations via gap sensors – just like a real spider.

The “Being a Spider” experience, led by Prof. Niklaus Heeb (ZHdK), will be presented to the public for the first time from September 2025 as a contribution to the “Museum of the Future” research and communication project of the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and the Natural History Museum of the University of Zurich.

The VR exhibition module is based on the VR 360° film from the Master’s thesis “With the senses of a spider – an arachnocentric experience” and the Junior Research in Design based on it. Supported by the Dossier Sustainability, funding program 2023, two interactive VR experiences were created that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of spiders.
