Spatial thinking can be improved through targeted practice. While appropriate training methods have previously been taught using exercise books, for example, the ‘Spatial Abilities’ research project aims to develop interactive, three-dimensional training software in the form of a video game. The game-based virtual environment contains exercises that build on each other, training aspects of spatial thinking, improving them in a playful way and making individual progress measurable and comparable. Five different categories of spatial imagination are specifically trained with increasing difficulty. The training environment is designed for tablet and desktop applications.

The high relevance of this development lies, for example, in the training of prerequisites required in STEM disciplines, which eliminates disadvantages and creates equal opportunities. In the context of advancing digitalisation, which is evident in the virtualisation of work and entertainment environments, the training environment can help users practise orientation in virtual worlds and thus overcome barriers. Spatial Abilities offers entertaining training opportunities for individuals, professional groups and educational groups who particularly need spatial thinking skills.
