Louis Moser has been part of the Public Data Lab (PDL) since June 1, 2025 and is working on an innovative project as part of his doctoral thesis: the development of an index of multiple deprivation for the canton of Zurich. The aim of this index is to spatially map various dimensions of social deprivation, e.g. in the areas of income, education, health and employment.
The development of the index is complex: Louis works closely with the Statistical Office of the Canton of Zurich and follows international best practices to bring together different data sources without violating data protection and privacy. Another focus of his work is the selection of suitable spatial units, such as grid cells or statistical zones, in order to make the index precise and application-oriented. Finally, the developed index will be applied in one or two case studies to demonstrate its practicability and to make the multiple disadvantages in the Canton of Zurich more visible.
