Social Media and the Journey Toward Help-Seeking in GBV Contexts

Gender-based violence (GBV) often goes unrecognised by those affected. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are increasingly shaping how individuals come to understand and name their experiences.

A recent study from Nimra Ahmed and her team explored how awareness content influences recognition and help-seeking. Using surveys and interviews, the team found that digital content often serves as a gentle entry point. Survivors engage on their own terms, and emotionally safe, actionable content can support their journey without overwhelming them.

These findings were presented by Nimra Ahmed in a webinar for the University of Sheffield Interpersonal Violence Research Network (ShiVAR).

The project «Supporting People Affected by Forced Marriage in Switzerland through Digital Transformation» is funded in the 2. Project Call.
