‘It’s inconceivable that the combustion engine will run forever’ – Interview with Anja Schulze

The European automotive industry is in crisis: 2024 sales figures for electric and combustion cars have fallen. Anja Schulze, Director of the Swiss Center for Automotive Research and DIZH bridge professor at the UZH and ZHAW, explains why electromobility still has a future in an interview with the Beobachter.

She emphasises that this is primarily due to the lack of a favourable e-car volume segment and that politicians must intervene with clear CO2 targets to ensure that the changeover is successful. The market is characterised by uncertainty due to contradictory signals from manufacturers and growing competition from Chinese suppliers.

Despite missing targets for new e-car registrations and charging infrastructure, Anja Schulze is convinced that the combustion engine has no future.

The interview was published on the Beobachter website on 9 May 2025.
