Lupins are regarded as a promising native protein crop and can be used as food, coffee substitutes or animal feed. However, growing them is challenging. Fungal infestation or extreme weather can, as farmer Beat Hürlimann’s case shows, wipe out a large part of the harvest. The SRF Tagesschau reported on this and on federal subsidies for lupin cultivation on 8 June. Roman Grüter (ZHAW) assesses the potential of lupins.
