The Cyber Safari is dedicated to the urgent need to make young people more resilient to the risks of the online world. The central focus of the research is the development and testing of an interactive
learning trail that combines digital education with physical activity in an urban setting.
The underlying question is: How can young people be empowered to engage with digital media in a competent, reflective and responsible manner through playful learning (gamification) and by linking real-world locations with digital content? This is implemented via a GPS-enabled app that guides participants through six thematic challenges at various locations in Zurich (e.g. the main railway station). In terms of content, the project focuses on the three core competencies of understanding, producing, and cooperating & communicating. Highly relevant topics such as digital stress, body image on social media, disinformation, data protection, cyberbullying and digital tunnel vision are addressed directly on site. The app will be available free of charge from April 2026 on the Google Play Store (Android) and the Apple App Store (iOS). In collaboration with the Department of Education of the Canton of Zurich, Cyber Safari is being used to promote digital resilience in school classes.
