SUMMARY:Identifying Discrimination in Online Social Network Advertising
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture by Professor Alan Mislove\n\n\nCan algorithms quietly exclude people from opportunities like jobs\, housing\, or credit? Are online ads treating everyone fairly\, and how would we even know? Who decides which ads you see\, and on what basis? What happens when automated advertising crosses the line from personalization to discrimination? \nThis guest lecture by Professor Alan Mislove will examine how discrimination can arise in online social network advertising and how it can be identified through empirical analysis. Drawing on methods from algorithmic auditing\, he will discuss how large-scale advertising and recommendation systems operate in practice\, how they may produce biased or unequal outcomes\, and what tools researchers can use to study these effects in real-world settings. The talk will address broader questions of algorithmic fairness\, transparency\, and accountability\, with attention to the implications for regulation and public policy. \nThe presentation will be followed by Q&A session where participants will have a chance to ask questions and engage in interactive discussion on translating technical research into policy action. SUMMARY:Multi-Modal Exploration of Medical Data with Agentic AI
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) have become integral to modern data systems both in academia and industry. However\, a critical limitation of LLMs is their tendency to produce non-factual outputs\, commonly referred to as hallucinations. In this talk\, recent results of leveraging agentic AI technologies for multi-modal data exploration in medicine will be presented\, where datasets comprise heterogeneous modalities\, including structured numerical data\, unstructured text\, and visual content. Kurt Stockinger\, professor at the ZHAW School of Engineering\, will demonstrate how agentic AI systems can be used to query such multi-modal datasets in natural language and thus provide the medical personnel with a powerful tool to gain new insights into their patient data in an intuitive way. \nOnline-Teilnahme

DESCRIPTION:Public Exploration mit Laura von Niederhäusern \nWissenschaftliche Daten zeigen eindeutig\, wie stark der CO2-Ausstoss das Klima verändert. Trotzdem handeln wir nicht konsequent danach. Dieses Ausbleiben von Handeln nennt die psychologische Forschung Knowledge-Action Gap. Rational-analytisches Wissen reicht oft nicht aus\, um Menschen zum Handeln zu bewegen. \nGenau hier setzt die Aktion R.I.P. – Wir beerdigen den Verbrennungsmotor\nan\, die von der künstlerischen Forscherin Laura von Niederhäusern zur Diskussion gestellt wird. Gemeinsam mit der aktivistischen Community act now! hat sie im öffentlichen Stadtraum in Zürich im November 2024 einen Trauermarsch mit anschliessender Abschiedsfeier inszeniert. Diese künstlerisch-performative Aktion eröffnet einen Resonanzraum für kollektive Affekte wie Trauer\, Empörung oder Mitgefühl. Sie lädt dazu ein\, durch gemeinschaftliche Betroffenheit und Humor die Distanz zwischen Wissen und eigenem Handeln situativ zu überwinden und neue Räume für kollektives Nachdenken und Engagement zu eröffnen. DESCRIPTION:The guest lecture by Bilge Kaan Güner  (Lawyer\, Consultant and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Tübingen\, Faculty at Law) examines the limits of formal legal responsibility under the GDPR when technology producers shape data protection by design (DPbD) without being directly regulated as controllers or processors. \nIt explores how this gap creates a structural tension between providers and data controllers\, and how complementary frameworks\, such as the AI Act\, Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and NIS2 Directive\, might recalibrate accountability. The discussion considers whether Recital 78 GDPR could function as a bridge clause\, enabling a more relational and systemic understanding of accountability in complex computing environments. \nThe participants will have the chance to ask questions and engage in active discussion. DESCRIPTION:Emotion AI\, a branch of affective computing\, promises to algorithmically detect\, infer\, or predict people’s emotions\, moods\, and mental states. These systems are rapidly spreading\, from entertainment and consumer technologies to education\, healthcare\, and the workplace\, despite an absence of regulation in the United States and weak regulatory efforts in the European Union. \nDrawing on a series of empirical studies with diverse social groups as well as critical analyses of emotion-AI technologies\, scholarly narratives\, and patents\, this talk by Prof. Dr. Nazanin Andalibi (University of Michigan\, USA) examines how emotion AI amplifies existing inequities and produces new forms of harm. DESCRIPTION:Gaming hat sich zu einem globalen Phänomen entwickelt und erreicht Millionen von Spieler:innen aus unterschiedlichen demografischen Gruppen. Allein in der Schweiz spielen rund zwei Millionen Menschen zweimal pro Woche Videospiele – davon sind 44% Frauen. Dennoch steht die Branche vor erheblichen Herausforderungen im Bezug auf Inklusivität. Theresa Schaffer arbeitet im Esports-Bereich und ist Ambassador bei Women in Games. Sie schaut mit uns gemeinsam Initiativen der DACH-Szene an und mit welchen Problemen diese zu kämpfen haben. SUMMARY:The Brussels Effect and Legal Transplants between the EU-Latin America's AI Policy and Governance
DESCRIPTION:This lecture examines how European regulatory frameworks\, through the so-called Brussels Effect\, influence debates on artificial intelligence governance in Latin America\, where legal transplants often draw—partially or entirely—on the EU’s AI Act. It situates these dynamics within the region’s institutional\, cultural\, and socioeconomic realities\, emphasizing both the opportunities and the frictions that arise when regulations designed for Europe are imported without critical adaptation. \nWhile the AI Act itself has faced criticism and remains largely untested\, such concerns are rarely acknowledged in Latin American policy debates. The lecture argues that the Brussels Effect is not inherently negative—as Europe tends to produce solid regulatory work—but that its unreflective transplant risks producing mismatches; the more responsible path lies in the careful analysis of the real needs of the region and adapting before legislating. DESCRIPTION:Die Vortragsreihe beleuchtet die enge Verbindung zwischen Medienwandel und gesellschaftlichem Wandel\, mit besonderem Fokus auf die fortschreitende Digitalisierung der Gesellschaft und auf Künstliche Intelligenz (KI). \nJede Woche teilen internationale Expertinnen und Experten sowie Referierende der Abteilung Media Change & Innovation (IKMZ) Erkenntnisse aus ihrer Forschung und diskutieren aktuelle Fragen. Die Themen reichen von religionsähnlichen\, transhumanistischen Verheissungen und Praktiken der Digitalisierung und KI\, über Sinnkonstruktion bei Influencerinnen und Influencern\, die Transformation des Menschseins durch Cyborgisierung\, die abschreckenden Effekte von Dataveillance (Datenüberwachung)\, bis hin zu Auswirkungen auf Anthropozentrismus und das Anthropozän und noch vieles mehr. \nDie öffentliche Vortragsreihe wird von der Abteilung Media Change & Innovation am Institut für Kommunikations- und Medienforschung (IKMZ) gemeinsam mit dem Center for Information Technology\, Society\, and Law (ITSL) organisiert und ist in die wöchentliche BA-Vorlesung von Prof. Dr. Michael Latzer integriert. DESCRIPTION:At this cybersecurity talk on Zoom\, Karim Khamaisi will share how people can stay connected when the mobile network fails. He will present a practical setup that combines a small radio network with an easy-to-use phone app\, so neighbours and volunteers can coordinate even without an Internet connection. \nIn a crisis\, you still need to message family\, ask for help\, and trust what you read. Field tests in Zürich showed working connections up to about 1.2 km\, with 92% of messages delivered successfully.
