SUMMARY:Kritik der Digitalisierung

SUMMARY:AI\, Culture & Society Reading Group: «Artificial Stupidity and Artificial Intelligence in the Anthropocene»
DESCRIPTION:AI follows stereotypes related to scientific research\, oftentimes expected to serve a useful purpose. Its paradigm-shifting potential is evident in direct applications such as automating processes\, creating intelligent assistants\, optimizing processes\, and solving previously intractable tasks with the power of vast datasets and deeper networks. While these technical advancements are transforming various domains – from research methodologies to corporate endeavors – our emphasis is on understanding the profound effects AI has on society at large. \nThe DSI Community AI\, Culture & Society aims to stimulate discussions on the societal impact of AI and create a forum to explore how the humanities can help to understand the role of AI in contemporary life. \nJoin the community for its February session to discuss Artificial Stupidity and Artificial Intelligence in the Anthropocene by Bernard Stiegler\, published by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research into the Anthropocene. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration: Link

SUMMARY:Humans In The Loop
DESCRIPTION:The film Humans in the Loop (2024) explores the often invisible human labour behind AI systems. Focusing on data annotation work carried out in different global contexts\, the film offers a critical perspective on the social\, economic and ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence. \nThe film directed and written by Aranya Sahay is based on a real phenomenon happening in various indigenous regions of India\, where tech companies have established backend offices for «data labeling.» Data labeling is a process that involves meta-tagging thousands of images and videos to teach an algorithm to recognize and differentiate between objects—essentially\, becoming the first step in machine learning. It is produced by Museum of Imagined futures under The Storiculture fellowship. \n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Mathivanan Rajendran\, producer of the film\, Rahul Srivastava (urbz) and Karin Schwiter (Department of Geography at UZH and DIZH Public Data Lab). Moderation: Rebecca Brauchli (ZHAW digital).  \n\n\nThis event is organised by ZHAW digital\, ZHdK Institute for the Performing Arts and Film and DIZH. \n\nNo registration needed. \nSubtitles are available and can be activated via the settings icon in the video player.

SUMMARY:The End of Truth? Forensics in the Age of Generative AI
DESCRIPTION:«Seeing is believing» no longer applies. As GenAI democratizes the creation of hyper-realistic deepfakes\, synthetic documents\, and cloned biometrics\, forensic science faces a fundamental challenge. In this talk\, Dr. Dominik Hänni from the Zurich Forensic Science Institute will explore the seismic shift in digital evidence and the emerging «arms race» between technical innovation and forensic analysis. He will discuss why Red Teaming is not just a safety exercise but a crucial tool to anticipate how autonomous agents and generative models might undermine our (legal) reality—and how we can fight back.\n\nJoin this 30-minute talk followed by a 15-minute Q&A to explore these challenges and take part in the discussion.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information

SUMMARY:Apéro Digital. Freeing minds: Responsible Development of Neurotechnology
DESCRIPTION:Neurotechnologies enable the measurement\, monitoring\, and stimulation of the human brain\, with applications ranging from medical treatments and brain–computer interfaces to consumer technologies that track sleep or enhance attention. While they hold great promise for improving health and quality of life\, they also raise critical questions around privacy\, autonomy\, and social inequality—especially as brain data is increasingly processed using AI. \nThe 7th edition of Apéro Digital brings together perspectives from research\, policy\, and industry to explore how neurotechnologies can be developed responsibly. The event features Ricardo Chavarriaga (ZHAW) on challenges and opportunities in neurotechnologies\, Roberto Andorno (UZH) on governance frameworks\, and Philipp Eger (IDUN Technologies) on responsible practices in neurotechnology companies. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Phänomen Podcast: Zur Psychologie hinter den Hörgewohnheiten
Was steckt psychologisch hinter unseren Hörgewohnheiten?

SUMMARY:Identifying Discrimination in Online Social Network Advertising
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecture by Professor Alan Mislove\n\n\nCan algorithms quietly exclude people from opportunities like jobs\, housing\, or credit? Are online ads treating everyone fairly\, and how would we even know? Who decides which ads you see\, and on what basis? What happens when automated advertising crosses the line from personalization to discrimination? \nThis guest lecture by Professor Alan Mislove will examine how discrimination can arise in online social network advertising and how it can be identified through empirical analysis. Drawing on methods from algorithmic auditing\, he will discuss how large-scale advertising and recommendation systems operate in practice\, how they may produce biased or unequal outcomes\, and what tools researchers can use to study these effects in real-world settings. The talk will address broader questions of algorithmic fairness\, transparency\, and accountability\, with attention to the implications for regulation and public policy. \nThe presentation will be followed by Q&A session where participants will have a chance to ask questions and engage in interactive discussion on translating technical research into policy action. We will be informed by the speaker’s experience advising regulators and serving in government\, including his time in the White House. \nMore information

SUMMARY:Multi-Modal Exploration of Medical Data with Agentic AI
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) have become integral to modern data systems both in academia and industry. However\, a critical limitation of LLMs is their tendency to produce non-factual outputs\, commonly referred to as hallucinations. In this talk\, recent results of leveraging agentic AI technologies for multi-modal data exploration in medicine will be presented\, where datasets comprise heterogeneous modalities\, including structured numerical data\, unstructured text\, and visual content. Kurt Stockinger\, professor at the ZHAW School of Engineering\, will demonstrate how agentic AI systems can be used to query such multi-modal datasets in natural language and thus provide the medical personnel with a powerful tool to gain new insights into their patient data in an intuitive way. \nOnline-Teilnahme

SUMMARY:R.I.P.
\nGenau hier setzt die Aktion R.I.P.

SUMMARY:AI & Law Lecture Series: From Formalism to Relational Accountability in Complex Computing Environments
DESCRIPTION:The guest lecture by Bilge Kaan Güner  (Lawyer\, Consultant and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Tübingen\, Faculty at Law) examines the limits of formal legal responsibility under the GDPR when technology producers shape data protection by design (DPbD) without being directly regulated as controllers or processors. \nIt explores how this gap creates a structural tension between providers and data controllers\, and how complementary frameworks\, such as the AI Act\, Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and NIS2 Directive\, might recalibrate accountability. The discussion considers whether Recital 78 GDPR could function as a bridge clause\, enabling a more relational and systemic understanding of accountability in complex computing environments. \nThe participants will have the chance to ask questions and engage in active discussion. The event will be followed by an Apéro for networking.\nAnyone who is interested is welcome to join. Please register for better coordination. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration: Link \nOrganisation: DSI Community AI & Law

SUMMARY:Weitere Regeln für das Netz: Das neue Plattformgesetz (KomPG) auf dem Prüfstand
\nWeitere Informationen

SUMMARY:Emotion AI: Utopian Promises\, Dystopian Realities
DESCRIPTION:Emotion AI\, a branch of affective computing\, promises to algorithmically detect\, infer\, or predict people’s emotions\, moods\, and mental states. These systems are rapidly spreading\, from entertainment and consumer technologies to education\, healthcare\, and the workplace\, despite an absence of regulation in the United States and weak regulatory efforts in the European Union. \nDrawing on a series of empirical studies with diverse social groups as well as critical analyses of emotion-AI technologies\, scholarly narratives\, and patents\, this talk by Prof. Dr. Nazanin Andalibi (University of Michigan\, USA) examines how emotion AI amplifies existing inequities and produces new forms of harm. Rather than promoting well-being\, fairness\, or improved conditions\, emotion AI disproportionately burdens marginalized communities\, deepens identity-based vulnerabilities\, and exacerbates the very structural challenges its proponents claim it will remedy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore information Link \nRegistration Link \nOrganisation DSI Community Ethics & DSI Community AI & Law
