DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has proven to be a disruptive technology with transformative potential in most areas of our digital society. Some even contend that this year will witness the advent of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). \nThe legal sector is no exception to these changes; in major law firms\, AI helps in drafting submissions and memoranda\, conducting due diligence\, and handling simple day-to-day administrative tasks. State courts and arbitral tribunals could equally draw on AI for a wide array of tasks\, ranging from administrative work to the drafting of judgments and possibly even a «robo-judge». \nThe lecture by Mr. Cyrill A. H. Chevalley (MLaw\, Attorney-at-law\, PhD Candidate in Law) will start by presenting the current state of AI use in courts and arbitral tribunals in various jurisdictions and explore potential future applications of AI. It will then discuss the normative question of whether we should make these uses and to what extent a «human in the loop» is indispensable. \nThe event is open to everybody who is interested. SUMMARY:ZKK-TALKS 2025 - Lösungen auf der Suche nach Problemen
DESCRIPTION:Unsere Gegenwart\, in der Technologie und Wissen exponentiell an Bedeutung gewinnen\, ist zugleich auch eine Zeit ungebremster Krisen – nicht zuletzt ausgelöst dadurch\, dass sich die ungleiche Verteilung von Ressourcen rasant zuspitzt. Interessant wird es\, wenn nicht die damit verbundenen Widersprüche als Problem adressiert werden – sondern stattdessen (meist lukrative) Möglichkeiten geliefert werden\, die Krisen zu «managen».\nDer Begriff «Lösungsorientierung» kann also ein Denken kennzeichnen\, das eher an Marktbedürfnissen als an der demokratischen Aushandlung der Interessen von Vielen orientiert ist. Das Versprechen\, die Macht der Technologie für das Gemeinwohl nutzen zu wollen\, gab Unternehmer:innen in dem Moment Legitimität zurück\, in dem klar wurde dass die kapitalistische Wirtschaftsweise eher soziale Probleme verursacht\, als sie zu lösen\, so die Soziologen Oliver Nachtwey und Timo Seidl. Sie argumentieren\, dass dieser Solutionismus den «Geist des digitalen Kapitalismus» kennzeichnet\, d.h. die Überzeugungen\, die das Handeln heutiger digitalen Eliten (Gründer\, Risikokapitalgeber\, leitende Ingenieure und Manager usw.) legitimieren\, motivieren und ausrichten.\nEvgeny Morozov definiert den Solutionismus als eine Ideologie\, die «alle komplexen sozialen Situationen entweder als sauber definierte Probleme mit definitiven\, berechenbaren Lösungen oder als transparente und selbstverständliche Prozesse umgestaltet\, die leicht optimiert werden können – wenn nur die richtigen Algorithmen vorhanden sind». Soziale Probleme erscheinen so nicht mehr als Ergebnis von Macht- oder Vermögensasymmetrien\, sondern als Ergebnis von Ineffizienzen und Mängeln: Sei es die Klimakrise\, der Hunger oder demotivierte Mitarbeiter:innen\, passend zu jedem gesellschaftlichen Nagel existiert ein technologischer Hammer. \nDie ZKK-Talkreihe widmet sich 2025 einer multidisziplinären Verknüpfung verschiedener Kritiken des Solutionismus. \nAm 6. Mai ist Tim Seitz mit seiner Forschung über den «neuen Geist des Kapitalismus» in sanften Regierungstechniken wie dem Design Thinking und Nudging zu Gast\, im Gespräch mit Sophia Prinz. \nUnd am 20. DESCRIPTION:The collection of data donations to access digital trace data for academic research has gained increasing importance over the last few years. In this approach\, users of digital platforms and services such as Google\, Meta\, TikTok\, Spotify\, or ChatGPT are asked to download their personal usage data from these platforms and donate them to a research project. This workshop\, titled “Introduction to Data Donation for Platform Research\,” will provide 1) an introduction to this new approach\, 2) an introduction to and demonstration of the Data Donation Module—an open-source web application for data donation projects that is free to use for researchers working at UZH—and 3) guidance for designing your own data donation project. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will understand the advantages and limitations of collecting data donations for research and gain practical knowledge of how a data donation collection can be implemented in your own research projects. \nWorkshop Structure and Agenda: \n\nIntroduction to data donation: We will provide a brief overview of what data donation is\, why it is a promising new approach for social science\, and what key considerations are needed when designing a data donation project.\nIntroduction to the Data Donation Module: We will present the Data Donation Module\, an open-source web application that can be used to conduct data donation projects across all digital (media) platforms and other digital traces. DESCRIPTION:Was ist jetzt? Wie ist es dazu gekommen? Und was ist im Kommen? Diese Fragen stehen im Zentrum von «Kulturanalyse jetzt!»\, der Ringvorlesung des Studienprogramms Kulturanalyse. Die Beiträge in Form von Vorträgen und GEsprächen mit Gästen\, fokussieren auf die Jetztzeit\, praktizieren\, was Hegel die «die Zeit in Gedanken erfasst» bezeichnet hat. Es geht um die Fragen\, welche die Gegenwart aufwirft\, die Probleme\, mit denen sie uns konfrontiert. In den Beiträgen werden die Ereignisse der Gegenwart aus persönlicher\, fachlicher und künstlerischer Perspektive analysiert\, um über die kulturellen\, sozialen\, politischen\, wirtschaftlichen und ästhetischen Konsequenzen dieser Gegenwart nachzudenken. \nWas uns in diesem Jahr besonders interessiert\, sind kulturanalytische Perspektiven auf KI. Für uns ist es dringlich zu fragen\, wie KI als neue Technologie sowohl den kulturellen Alltag als auch die Verhältnisse in den Kulturen verändert. SUMMARY:Explainable AI in Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:The DSI Community AI & Law is a platform for addressing the legal challenges of artificial intelligence\, fostering academic discussions with an interdisciplinary perspective and facilitating networking among researchers\, students and professionals. During the Autumn Semester 2024 and Spring Semester 2025\, the Community is planning a series of guest lectures\, where leading professors and researchers from Swiss and international universities can share their research and expertise. \nOur first guest lecture «Explainable AI in Healthcare» based on the recent research article «Aligning XAI with EU Regulations for Smart Biomedical Devices: A Methodology for Compliance Analysis» (Link) featuring the first two authors Dr. Francesco Sovrano and Mr. Michael Lognoul\, who will focus on the significance of explainability in artificial intelligence and robotics\, particularly addressing the black-box problem where AI decisions lack transparency\, with an interdisciplinary perspective of both computer science\, healthcare and law. The participants will be able to ask questions and engage in active discussion. \nThe event is open to public and free of charge\, anybody who is interested in welcome to join.
