SUMMARY:Legal Personhood for AI Systems: Lunchtime Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Legal personhood status for non-human agents has been given significant academic attention in recent years. The discussion over robot personality was first formalized at the European Union level in 2017 when policy makers articulated the benefits of legal status for AI systems. Their perspective was that a specific legal status for AI systems would enable them the capacity to compensate for any damage caused by their actions. In response\, the activist-penned «Robotics Open Letter» criticized this view\, noting that AI systems are insufficiently advanced to warrant such a status. The debate has evolved further in the time since this 2017 episode\, with legal and policy scholars adding nuance. \nThe DSI Community AI & Law invites to an interdisciplinary talk by Mr. Karl Reimer (PhD Researcher at UZH Faculty of Philosophy): First\, he will motivate the work and define what is meant by legal personhood from a jurisprudence perspective. Then he will recount Visa A.J. Kurki’s Bundle Theory of Legal Personhood and show how AI systems can hold some – but not all – rights via their agential powers. He will show how such agential powers are correlative to legal authority and rights. Finally\, he will illustrate how his argument would apply to various types of agents such as robots\, while also highlighting differences as compared to traditional human personhood. SUMMARY:The Algorithm Resistance – Writing the Rules for Social Media & AI in Public Debates
DESCRIPTION:What are the influences of online platforms on democracy and deliberation? What are the implications of the Big Tech for policy-making? And how should these aspects be integrated in the upcoming law on online platforms in Switzerland? \nApéro Digital is launching its 4th event\, in collaboration with AlgorithmWatch CH and Dezentrum\, on the topic Regulatory Pathways for Online Platforms in Switzerland. Together with AI experts and media specialists at different Federal Offices\, we will explore the influence of Big Tech and AI on democracy\, deliberation and elections through participatory and co-creation approaches. The event offers a curated space for technology developers and operators\, civil society representatives\, public authorities\, as well as ethical\, legal\, and regulatory experts to exchange insights and share experiences\, and to identify opportunities and challenges for navigating the regulatory terrain forward. SUMMARY:New Game Plus. Critical Thinking with Video Games
DESCRIPTION:As (pop) cultural media\, video games are more relevant than ever in times of global crises. They are not «free of ideology» or to be understood as autonomous works of art. They are always tied to historical moments\, cultural discourse and material realities that affect the world\, recipients and producers. Culture seeps into the code\, proactively or unknowingly\, and must therefore be considered and criticized at any time. \nGames often show the recipients worlds that they are supposed to explore and interact with. These worlds are tied to aesthetics as well as ideologies that may not always be apparent at first glance but continue to stay in dialogue with us and our personal (real) worlds. \nAdditionally\, material realities remain endangered in 2025. Existential catastrophes are already underway. This political relevance is evident in indie games as well as larger productions\, in hate-filled online debates\, but also in questions about global capitalism and its impact on the distribution of material goods. Diversity in character editors often leads to hate comments\, lists of «ideologically woke» games are created\, game studios are closed\, and mass layoffs have become the norm in the industry. Games are being instrumentalized for war purposes and\, at the same time\, offer spaces and publics of resistance. \nAt this interactive conference\, the organizers’ aim is to ask how (social) sciences and video games can be critically analysed in tandem to analyse contemporary crises. DESCRIPTION:Misinformation and propaganda have been identified as major global risks\, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024. Meanwhile\, platforms like Meta and X are shutting down their fact-checking initiatives\, leaving news consumers exposed to unfiltered information. But how can readers become more aware and better equipped to recognize misinformation and propaganda? \nWe invite you to the presentation of Apollolytics — an automated propaganda detection tool developed by our research team under supervision of Prof. Dr. Liudmila Zavolokina and Prof. Dr. Alexandre Bovet (about team). Using Large Language Models\, Apollolytics detects propaganda in news articles and provides context-rich explanations\, enhancing users‘ critical thinking. \nDuring the event\, we will demonstrate the tool in action and share key findings from our research. SUMMARY:ZKK-TALKS 2025 - Lösungen auf der Suche nach Problemen
DESCRIPTION:Unsere Gegenwart\, in der Technologie und Wissen exponentiell an Bedeutung gewinnen\, ist zugleich auch eine Zeit ungebremster Krisen – nicht zuletzt ausgelöst dadurch\, dass sich die ungleiche Verteilung von Ressourcen rasant zuspitzt. Interessant wird es\, wenn nicht die damit verbundenen Widersprüche als Problem adressiert werden – sondern stattdessen (meist lukrative) Möglichkeiten geliefert werden\, die Krisen zu «managen».\nDer Begriff «Lösungsorientierung» kann also ein Denken kennzeichnen\, das eher an Marktbedürfnissen als an der demokratischen Aushandlung der Interessen von Vielen orientiert ist. Das Versprechen\, die Macht der Technologie für das Gemeinwohl nutzen zu wollen\, gab Unternehmer:innen in dem Moment Legitimität zurück\, in dem klar wurde dass die kapitalistische Wirtschaftsweise eher soziale Probleme verursacht\, als sie zu lösen\, so die Soziologen Oliver Nachtwey und Timo Seidl. Sie argumentieren\, dass dieser Solutionismus den «Geist des digitalen Kapitalismus» kennzeichnet\, d.h. die Überzeugungen\, die das Handeln heutiger digitalen Eliten (Gründer\, Risikokapitalgeber\, leitende Ingenieure und Manager usw.) legitimieren\, motivieren und ausrichten.\nEvgeny Morozov definiert den Solutionismus als eine Ideologie\, die «alle komplexen sozialen Situationen entweder als sauber definierte Probleme mit definitiven\, berechenbaren Lösungen oder als transparente und selbstverständliche Prozesse umgestaltet\, die leicht optimiert werden können – wenn nur die richtigen Algorithmen vorhanden sind». Soziale Probleme erscheinen so nicht mehr als Ergebnis von Macht- oder Vermögensasymmetrien\, sondern als Ergebnis von Ineffizienzen und Mängeln: Sei es die Klimakrise\, der Hunger oder demotivierte Mitarbeiter:innen\, passend zu jedem gesellschaftlichen Nagel existiert ein technologischer Hammer. \nDie ZKK-Talkreihe widmet sich 2025 einer multidisziplinären Verknüpfung verschiedener Kritiken des Solutionismus. \nAm 10. April spricht Simon Schaupp mit Christine Lötscher über das Verhältnis von Problem und Lösung in Bezug auf die ökologische Krise. \nAm 6. Mai ist Tim Seitz mit seiner Forschung über den «neuen Geist des Kapitalismus» in sanften Regierungstechniken wie dem Design Thinking und Nudging zu Gast\, im Gespräch mit Sophia Prinz. \nUnd am 20. SUMMARY:Machine Musicianship Installation

Dadurch eröffnen sich vielfältige künstlerische Möglichkeiten\, insbesondere für die Realisation algorithmisch generierter Musik. \nSeit seiner Akquise durch das ICST wurden im Rahmen eines laufenden Forschungsprojekts verschiedene Anwendungen und Interfaces zur Ansteuerung programmiert und im konzertanten oder installativen Format mit dem Publikum geteilt (Generative Art Conference\, GMTH\, Design Biennale Zürich). \nIn der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institute of Product Development and Production Technologies (IPP) der ZHAW wurde 2024 im Rahmen dieses Forschungsprojektes ein Pedalautomat entwickelt. Dieser ermöglicht die maschinelle Steuerung des Klavierpedals. \nDer neue Pedalautomat wird im Konzert Machine Musicianship am 8. April erstmals eingesetzt und vorgestellt. Mit Kompositionsbeiträgen von Kosmas Giannoutakis\, Philippe Kocher\, Pascal Lund-Jensen\, Micha Seidenberg und Lara Stanic werden die neuen Möglichkeiten umfassend erkundet. DESCRIPTION:Wie wird Digitalisierung zur Chance für Soziale Arbeit? Das Konzept «Doing Digitality» zeigt praxisnah und machtkritisch\, wie ein verantwortungsvoller Umgang gelingt. \n\nDigitalisierung ist ein Megatrend. Arbeits- und Lebenswelten befinden sich im Umbruch. Neue Möglichkeiten\, veränderte Machtformen aber auch Einschränkungen und Abhängigkeiten durchdringen die Kultur der digitalisierten Gesellschaft. Öffentlichkeit und Politik sind fasziniert von den Chancen und überfordert von den Dynamiken. \nWie jede Profession ist auch die Soziale Arbeit heute gefordert\, sich kritisch mit Digitalisierung auseinanderzusetzen. Doch das reicht nicht: Sie muss darüber hinaus Konzepte und Methoden entwickeln\, um aus der Digitalisierung das Beste für sich und ihre Adressat:innen zu machen. Tagtäglich beschäftigen wir uns in der Praxis und im Studium (un)bewusst mit digitalen Dingen und es stellt sich die Fragen\, wie wir diesen Umgang im Sinne der Profession gestalten und entwickeln. \nDas Konzept Doing Digitality von Weinhardt (2021) greift genau diese Fragestellung auf. Es beschreibt die „Digitalisierung von unten“ durch die Fähigkeiten und Erfahrungen von Adressat:innen und Fachpersonen. So verschiebt sich der Megatrend in die Alltagspraxis. \nDie Veranstaltung «Doing Digitality» unserer Reihe «Forum S» vom 8. April leistet einen Beitrag zur Diskussion\, wie Soziale Arbeit sich in einer Kultur der Digitalität entwickeln kann\, die den Chancen\, Möglichkeiten und auch den Anforderungen des digitalen Zeitalters in angemessener\, professioneller Weise begegnet. SUMMARY:ZKK-TALKS 2025 - Lösungen auf der Suche nach Problemen
DESCRIPTION:Unsere Gegenwart\, in der Technologie und Wissen exponentiell an Bedeutung gewinnen\, ist zugleich auch eine Zeit ungebremster Krisen – nicht zuletzt ausgelöst dadurch\, dass sich die ungleiche Verteilung von Ressourcen rasant zuspitzt. Interessant wird es\, wenn nicht die damit verbundenen Widersprüche als Problem adressiert werden – sondern stattdessen (meist lukrative) Möglichkeiten geliefert werden\, die Krisen zu «managen».\nDer Begriff «Lösungsorientierung» kann also ein Denken kennzeichnen\, das eher an Marktbedürfnissen als an der demokratischen Aushandlung der Interessen von Vielen orientiert ist. Das Versprechen\, die Macht der Technologie für das Gemeinwohl nutzen zu wollen\, gab Unternehmer:innen in dem Moment Legitimität zurück\, in dem klar wurde dass die kapitalistische Wirtschaftsweise eher soziale Probleme verursacht\, als sie zu lösen\, so die Soziologen Oliver Nachtwey und Timo Seidl. Sie argumentieren\, dass dieser Solutionismus den «Geist des digitalen Kapitalismus» kennzeichnet\, d.h. die Überzeugungen\, die das Handeln heutiger digitalen Eliten (Gründer\, Risikokapitalgeber\, leitende Ingenieure und Manager usw.) legitimieren\, motivieren und ausrichten.\nEvgeny Morozov definiert den Solutionismus als eine Ideologie\, die «alle komplexen sozialen Situationen entweder als sauber definierte Probleme mit definitiven\, berechenbaren Lösungen oder als transparente und selbstverständliche Prozesse umgestaltet\, die leicht optimiert werden können – wenn nur die richtigen Algorithmen vorhanden sind». Soziale Probleme erscheinen so nicht mehr als Ergebnis von Macht- oder Vermögensasymmetrien\, sondern als Ergebnis von Ineffizienzen und Mängeln: Sei es die Klimakrise\, der Hunger oder demotivierte Mitarbeiter:innen\, passend zu jedem gesellschaftlichen Nagel existiert ein technologischer Hammer. \nDie ZKK-Talkreihe widmet sich 2025 einer multidisziplinären Verknüpfung verschiedener Kritiken des Solutionismus. \nUnd am 20. Den Auftakt des Abends gestaltet Prof. Dr. Sascha Schneider mit einem spannenden Impulsvortrag\, der erste Einblicke in das Thema «Digitale Unterrichtsmaterialien lernförderlich gestalten» geben wird.  Tina Zürcher von proEdu ergänzt mit einem Einblick in ein Praxisprojekt mit 10 Schulen zu Hörstiften im Zyklus 1. \nWir verbinden inspirierende Praxisbeispiele mit der Expertise der UZH. An verschiedenen Stationen kommen Praxis und Forschung in einen Dialog: \n\nMit Soundolino (Hörstifte) wird der Unterricht hörbar und interaktiv. Lehrpersonen stellen dieses Projekt\, das von Lehrpersonen entwickelt worden ist\, vor.\nTesten Sie Ihr KI-Tool der Wahl und vergleichen es mit der Expertise der UZH. SUMMARY:Everything under Control? How Universities Manage the Impact of Digital Transformation
DESCRIPTION:The presentation examines the impact of institutional digitalization strategies on teaching practices and the tension field created by digitalization processes at various levels. \nThe higher education system plays a crucial role in preparing individuals for an increasingly digitalized world. In response to rapid developments\, universities are developing strategies to cope with technological change (such as GenAI) and find their positions. The influences of digitalization affect both the institutional and individual levels\, manifesting as disruptive innovations within educational organizations. DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has proven to be a disruptive technology with transformative potential in most areas of our digital society. Some even contend that this year will witness the advent of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). \nThe legal sector is no exception to these changes; in major law firms\, AI helps in drafting submissions and memoranda\, conducting due diligence\, and handling simple day-to-day administrative tasks. State courts and arbitral tribunals could equally draw on AI for a wide array of tasks\, ranging from administrative work to the drafting of judgments and possibly even a «robo-judge». \nThe lecture by Mr. Cyrill A. H. Chevalley (MLaw\, Attorney-at-law\, PhD Candidate in Law) will start by presenting the current state of AI use in courts and arbitral tribunals in various jurisdictions and explore potential future applications of AI. It will then discuss the normative question of whether we should make these uses and to what extent a «human in the loop» is indispensable. \nThe event is open to everybody who is interested.
