SUMMARY:ZKK TALK #3 / Gillian Rose und Roland Meyer
DESCRIPTION:The promised solutions of the digital city\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs tech companies strive for political dominance and the widespread use of AI advances in more and more institutions and areas of public life\, a critical intersectional perspective on the questionable promises of «digital solutionism» is becoming increasingly important. One of those areas is the management of life in cities. The city of Zurich\, in particular\, has developed into a global center of the digital platform economy in recent years. But how do the technology-driven solutions offered by major tech companies relate to the conflictual democratic debate about a livable future for our cities? And more broadly\, what sorts of urban life are being imagined when digital corporations proffer their visions for cities?\nGillian Rose discusses digital solutionism\, the problematic visions of the digital city\, and her analysis of «City Digital Twins» with Roland Meyer. \nThis evening is part of the series ZKK Talks 2025 / SOLUTIONISM. Lösungen auf der Suche nach Problemen

SUMMARY:Embodied Generativity: Critical AI\, Art & the Body
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk with Eryk Salvaggio\n\n\nThe interface of generative AI presents a passive mode of media production\, modeled after the submission of a ticket to a tech stack\, or a request for a chatbot helpdesk. What other modes of interaction might artists engage with to get at these tools beyond the keyboard? In a presentation of selected works\, the artist\, theorist and AI researcher Eryk Salvaggio explores positions\, gestures and attitudes toward AI that reflect its brittle comprehension of creative logic and the world at large. This talk will present works and propose novel workflows that challenge ideas of «generativity» by moving it from the visual senses to the body\, examining video\, performance\, dance\, and puppetry. \nEryk Salvaggio is a researcher and new media artist interested in the social and cultural impacts of artificial intelligence. His work explores the creative misuse of AI and the transformation of archives into datasets for AI training: a practice designed to expose ideologies of tech and to confront the gaps between datasets and the worlds they claim to represent. A blend of hacker\, researcher\, designer and artist\, he has been published in academic journals\, spoken at music and film festivals\, and consulted on tech policy at the national level. He is a researcher on AI\, art and education at the metaLab (at) Harvard University\, the Emerging Technology Research Advisor to the Siegel Family Endowment\, and a fellow and top contributor to Tech Policy Press. He holds an MSc in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics and an MSc in Applied Cybernetics from the Australian National University. \nA cooperation of the DIZH-Bridge Professorship for Digital Cultures and Arts with the Department Fine Arts (DFA) at ZHdK. \nThe event will be held in English. \nVenue: Raum 6.K04 / Zürcher Hochschule der Künste\nPfingstweidstrasse 96\, 8031 Zürich

SUMMARY:Legal Personhood for AI Systems: Lunchtime Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Legal personhood status for non-human agents has been given significant academic attention in recent years. The discussion over robot personality was first formalized at the European Union level in 2017 when policy makers articulated the benefits of legal status for AI systems. Their perspective was that a specific legal status for AI systems would enable them the capacity to compensate for any damage caused by their actions. In response\, the activist-penned «Robotics Open Letter» criticized this view\, noting that AI systems are insufficiently advanced to warrant such a status. The debate has evolved further in the time since this 2017 episode\, with legal and policy scholars adding nuance. \nThe DSI Community AI & Law invites to an interdisciplinary talk by Mr. Karl Reimer (PhD Researcher at UZH Faculty of Philosophy): First\, he will motivate the work and define what is meant by legal personhood from a jurisprudence perspective. Then he will recount Visa A.J. Kurki’s Bundle Theory of Legal Personhood and show how AI systems can hold some – but not all – rights via their agential powers. He will show how such agential powers are correlative to legal authority and rights. Finally\, he will illustrate how his argument would apply to various types of agents such as robots\, while also highlighting differences as compared to traditional human personhood. There will be a chance to ask questions and discuss\, followed by lunch. \nThis lunchtime lecture is open to anyone interested\, but space is limited.\n \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration / Anmeldung: Link \nOrganisation: DSI Community AI & Law \nContact / Kontakt: ai-law@dsi.uzh.ch

SUMMARY:The Algorithm Resistance – Writing the Rules for Social Media & AI in Public Debates
DESCRIPTION:What are the influences of online platforms on democracy and deliberation? What are the implications of the Big Tech for policy-making? And how should these aspects be integrated in the upcoming law on online platforms in Switzerland? \nApéro Digital is launching its 4th event\, in collaboration with AlgorithmWatch CH and Dezentrum\, on the topic Regulatory Pathways for Online Platforms in Switzerland. Together with AI experts and media specialists at different Federal Offices\, we will explore the influence of Big Tech and AI on democracy\, deliberation and elections through participatory and co-creation approaches. The event offers a curated space for technology developers and operators\, civil society representatives\, public authorities\, as well as ethical\, legal\, and regulatory experts to exchange insights and share experiences\, and to identify opportunities and challenges for navigating the regulatory terrain forward. Our goal is raising awareness of online platforms and their impact on society\, and empowering the community with enhanced understanding about collective actions leading to a prosperous digital future. The event will conclude with an exquisite Apéro Riche for networking. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:New Game Plus. Critical Thinking with Video Games
DESCRIPTION:As (pop) cultural media\, video games are more relevant than ever in times of global crises. They are not «free of ideology» or to be understood as autonomous works of art. They are always tied to historical moments\, cultural discourse and material realities that affect the world\, recipients and producers. Culture seeps into the code\, proactively or unknowingly\, and must therefore be considered and criticized at any time. \nGames often show the recipients worlds that they are supposed to explore and interact with. These worlds are tied to aesthetics as well as ideologies that may not always be apparent at first glance but continue to stay in dialogue with us and our personal (real) worlds. \nAdditionally\, material realities remain endangered in 2025. Existential catastrophes are already underway. This political relevance is evident in indie games as well as larger productions\, in hate-filled online debates\, but also in questions about global capitalism and its impact on the distribution of material goods. Diversity in character editors often leads to hate comments\, lists of «ideologically woke» games are created\, game studios are closed\, and mass layoffs have become the norm in the industry. Games are being instrumentalized for war purposes and\, at the same time\, offer spaces and publics of resistance. \nAt this interactive conference\, the organizers’ aim is to ask how (social) sciences and video games can be critically analysed in tandem to analyse contemporary crises. The idea is that the participants and speakers will not «only» listen to lectures but will also exchange ideas with each other in workshop-style sessions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen / Wann: April 14 & 15\, 2025\, Day 1: 15:00 – 19:15 / Day 2: 9:30 –14:45 \nWhere / Wo: Day 1: Swiss Game Hub\, Erika-Mann-Strasse 1\, 8050 Zürich / Day 2: University of Zurich\, KOL-E-09\, Rämistrasse 71\, 8001 Zürich \nLanguage / Sprache:  English \nRegistration / Anmeldung: none \nOrganisation: DSI Community Gaming & ISEK – Popular Culture Studies UZH \nContact: andrea-luca.bossard@uzh.ch / hiloko.kato@ds.uzh.ch \nMore Information: Link

SUMMARY:Detecting propaganda: Can AI make us better news readers?
DESCRIPTION:Misinformation and propaganda have been identified as major global risks\, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2024. Meanwhile\, platforms like Meta and X are shutting down their fact-checking initiatives\, leaving news consumers exposed to unfiltered information. But how can readers become more aware and better equipped to recognize misinformation and propaganda? \nWe invite you to the presentation of Apollolytics — an automated propaganda detection tool developed by our research team under supervision of Prof. Dr. Liudmila Zavolokina and Prof. Dr. Alexandre Bovet (about team). Using Large Language Models\, Apollolytics detects propaganda in news articles and provides context-rich explanations\, enhancing users‘ critical thinking. \nDuring the event\, we will demonstrate the tool in action and share key findings from our research. Prior to the event\, participants will receive a link to try out the Apollolytics. \nThe event is open to everybody who is interested. After the presentation\, we invite you to continue the conversation over an apéro. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:ZKK-TALKS 2025 - Lösungen auf der Suche nach Problemen
SUMMARY:Beyond Compliance: Responsible Technology Use as a Competitive Advantage in Private Security and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:In today’s digital landscape\, private security companies face unprecedented challenges balancing technological innovation with ethical considerations and human rights standards. This presentation introduces a comprehensive toolkit for responsible technology use that transforms potential risks into business opportunities. \nOriginally developed for the private security sector but broadly applicable across industries\, the approach provides practical implementation strategies tailored to organizations of all sizes. Drawing from compelling real-world examples of technology failures that resulted in significant financial losses and reputational damage\, it will be demonstrated how responsible technology practices not only mitigate risks but create measurable competitive advantages. Attendees will gain actionable insights into addressing key challenges including data protection\, algorithmic bias\, surveillance ethics\, and emerging technologies while enhancing their market position through increased client trust\, regulatory compliance\, and operational resilience. Join the event to discover how ethical technology implementation can become your organization’s strategic differentiator in an increasingly scrutinized digital environment. \nSpeaker at the event will be Anne-Marie Buzatu\, Executive Director of the ICT4Peace Foundation. \nIn her role\, Anne-Marie Buzatu actively leads and conducts policy research\, offers strategic advice to governments and multilateral organizations\, and spearheads a variety of capacity-building courses at the intersection of peace\, security\, and technology\, with particular attention to inclusive approaches to digital peacebuilding. Before assuming her current position\, Anne-Marie was Deputy Head at the Public-Private Partnerships Division of DCAF in Geneva. There\, she was instrumental in developing the International Code of Conduct for Private Security Service Providers (ICoC) and its oversight body (ICoCA)\, establishing human rights-based standards and oversight and accountability for the private security industry. In addition to her expertise in international law and security policy\, Anne-Marie has a background in the tech sector\, having worked for several years as a web developer and database administrator. \nThe presentation is followed by a networking aperitif. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nRegistration / Anmeldung: Link \nOrganisation: CYREN ZH

SUMMARY:Machine Musicianship Installation
DESCRIPTION:Seit Anfang 2018 ist das ICST im Besitz eines Klavierautomaten.

SUMMARY:Forum S: Doing Digitality - Soziale Arbeit Macht Digitalisierung
DESCRIPTION:Wie wird Digitalisierung zur Chance für Soziale Arbeit?

SUMMARY:Mustererkennung\, oder: Wie Kulturen digital wurden
DESCRIPTION:Antrittsvorlesung Prof. Dr. Roland Meyer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProf.
