SUMMARY:Apéro Digital: Friends or Foes? Digitalization & Sustainability towards COP30
DESCRIPTION:What are the carbon footprints of digital technologies such as AI and data-driven services? How can AI systems be effectively used to monitor deforestation\, greenhouse gas emissions\, and responsible use of resources? Will IoT sensors and open environmental data platforms enable participative climate action and ecosystem protection? And how can digital technologies help accelerate climate action and environmental protection\, while enabling environmental stewardship? \nApéro Digital is launching its 5th event\, in collaboration with the Zurich Knowledge Center for Sustainable Development(ZKSD)\, on the topic Aligning Digitalization with Sustainability for COP30. In this event\, stakeholders interested in sustainability\, climate action\, environment policy\, bioeconomy\, Big Tech\, AI\, social innovation\, or are currently involved in related activities\, will gather to explore the opportunities and challenges for setting and navigating the COP30 agenda forward. The event will conclude with an exquisite Apéro Riche for networking. Confirmed speakers include: \n\nDr. Christian Schaffner\, Executive Director\, Energy Science Center (ESC)\, ETH\nSamira Keller\, Scientific Officer\, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA)\nMarius Semm & Jakob Tresch\, CEO & CTO\, Niatsu\n\nThe event offers a curated space for public authorities\, industry members\, civil society representatives\, policy makers\, innovators\, as well as ethical\, legal\, and regulatory experts to exchange insights and share experiences\, and to identify challenges for setting the COP30 agenda. Our goal is raising awareness of the importance of achieving an equilibrium between digitalization and sustainability\, and empowering the community with enhanced understanding about collective actions leading to concrete paths towards achieving such equilibrium. The event will conclude with an exquisite Apéro Riche for networking. Come join us and be part of the change!\nRegistration: link \n********** \nAbout Apéro Digital  \nApéro Digital is an event series funded by the DIZH Innovation Program with a focus on outreach. With the vision of fostering collaboration around digitalization and innovation around the Greater Zurich Area\, events are organized in engaging formats including public talks\, round tables\, expert or citizen panels\, peer exchanges\, fireside chats\, and networking opportunities – all with a participatory and co-creative approach. By combining technology foresight\, storytelling\, and shared experiences\, we aim to deepen collective understandings about societal transformations driven by digitalization. The project is supported by the Canton of Zurich and managed by The BRIDGE Lab at the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Responsible AI Innovation Group at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). For further information\, please visit the project website and the LinkedIn page. \nAbout the ZKSD \nWith the ZKSD\, the four sponsoring universities – University of Zurich (UZH)\, Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW)\, Zurich University of Teacher Education (PHZH)\, and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) – have created a hub for sustainability projects together with the Hamasil Foundation\, which helps to bridge the gap between knowledge and committed action. The ZKSD promotes the exchange of ideas among researchers\, lecturers\, and students from the four universities\, as well as the general public\, in the field of sustainable development. With the goal of driving forward the Agenda 2030 and the 17 SDGs\, the ZKSD envisions itself to act as physical and virtual meeting place\, promoting informal communication between its members\, as well as dialogue with the public\, across disciplinary and institutional boundaries. Under the umbrella of the ZKSD\, the four universities will explore and develop solution-oriented strategies for the challenges of sustainability\, together with actors from science\, education\, civil society\, business\, politics\, and the arts.

SUMMARY:Apéro Philo: AI\, Post-Intellectual Property\, and Co-Inherited Wealth
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the ZHAW School of Life Sciences and Facility Management\, and supported by The BRIDGE Lab\, this event explores how Generative AI challenges traditional notions of intellectual property\, authorship\, and ownership. As AI systems increasingly build on vast public and private datasets\, often without consent or compensation\, we face a need to rethink how knowledge and creative output are treated. Could alternative models like “co-inherited wealth”\, the idea that innovation and knowledge are collective inheritances rather than individual assets\, offer a more just and future-oriented framework?\nJoin Marina Skorulskaja\, Thomas Goetz\, and other researchers and students at UZH and ZHAW to learn more about it! An apéro will be offered following exciting discussions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nRegistration / Anmeldung: Link \nOrganisation: DSI Community Ethics

SUMMARY:Digital Sovereignty in a Fragmented World: Power\, Control\, and the Future of Global Order
DESCRIPTION:The digital revolution has reshaped how nations govern\, compete\, and interact with each other. It has also changed States’ abilities to exercise power – both regulatory and direct – without regard to distance and borders. What does this mean for users\, businesses\, Swiss and Europeans? \nThis lecture by Przemysław Roguski explores the urgent global debate on digital sovereignty: the struggle of states to control data\, technologies and infrastructures within their borders. Through a comparative analysis of Europe\, the United States\, China and Russia\, it examines how different conceptions of sovereignty are rewriting the rules of international law and geopolitics. \nDr. Przemysław Roguski is an assistant professor at the Jagiellonian University Chair for Public International Law and Principal Investigator at the «Sovereignty 2.0 – ‘digital sovereignty’ in light of public international law» project\, which is financed with a grant from the Polish National Science Council (NCN). His research focuses on the law of peacetime cyber operations and different aspects of international law relating to cybersecurity\, ICT and internet governance. Przemysław holds law degrees from the University of Mainz (Germany)\, Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) and a PhD in international law from Jagiellonian University. He is a Senior Advisor at ICT4Peace Foundation and a DSI Fellow in the summer of 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nMore information / Weitere Infos: Link \nRegistration / Anmeldung: Link \n

SUMMARY:Mobilizing Retirees: The Missing Piece in Boosting Digital Safety
DESCRIPTION:Switzerland has a hidden superpower: its retirees. Many people in retirement are looking for new purpose\, new challenges – and new ways to give back. Retirees bring valuable expertise from their careers in education\, health\, business\, IT\, management and more. They understand people. They know how to communicate. And they often have the time and motivation to get involved to strengthen the digital skills in schools\, libraries\, and senior homes. \nJoin CYREN ZH\, a project for the DSI Community Cybersecurity\, to explore how volunteer engagement – especially from retirees – can help strengthen digital skills in our communities. Gérald Vernez (digiVolution) will present the national CyberPatrouilleur initiative and its potential for the Canton of Zurich. Dr. Melanie Knieps (CYREN ZH) will lead the workshop. The aim is to develop concrete ideas and next steps for involving retirees in building a safer digital future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration: Link \nOrganisation: CYREN ZH\, a project of the DSI Community Cybersecurity

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ in Games

SUMMARY:The New Voyeurism: Criminalising the Creation of «Deepfake Porn»
DESCRIPTION:Lawmakers around the world are turning their attention to deepfake sexual abuse to reduce its prevalence and provide redress to victims. Thus far\, both civil and criminal law reforms have tended to focus on the distribution of this material. \nFar less attention has been given to targeting the root cause\, namely the creation of these «sexual digital forgeries». In their upcoming article\, Clare M. S. McGlynn and Rüya Tuna Toparlak provide the first comprehensive examination of the criminalisation of the creation of sexually explicit deepfakes\, advancing the idea that this phenomenon should be understood as the «new voyeurism». They explore the harmful nature of this behaviour including the «invisible threat» of deepfake sexual abuse now pervading the lives of all women and girls and justify the deployment of criminal sanctions. This is followed by an analysis of the laws in jurisdictions which currently criminalise creating sexually explicit deepfakes. \nIn this presentation\, Rüya Tuna Toparlak (PhD candidate at University of Luzern) will talk about the current epidemic of sexual digital forgeries\, their legal standing and legal policy decisions around the world to combat the abuse as well as the applicable laws in Switzerland. The lecture will be followed by lunch and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration / Anmeldung: Link \nOrganisation: DSI Community AI & Law

SUMMARY:ZKK TALK #3 / Gillian Rose und Roland Meyer
DESCRIPTION:The promised solutions of the digital city\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs tech companies strive for political dominance and the widespread use of AI advances in more and more institutions and areas of public life\, a critical intersectional perspective on the questionable promises of «digital solutionism» is becoming increasingly important. One of those areas is the management of life in cities. The city of Zurich\, in particular\, has developed into a global center of the digital platform economy in recent years. But how do the technology-driven solutions offered by major tech companies relate to the conflictual democratic debate about a livable future for our cities? And more broadly\, what sorts of urban life are being imagined when digital corporations proffer their visions for cities?\nGillian Rose discusses digital solutionism\, the problematic visions of the digital city\, and her analysis of «City Digital Twins» with Roland Meyer. \nThis evening is part of the series ZKK Talks 2025 / SOLUTIONISM. SUMMARY:Embodied Generativity: Critical AI\, Art & the Body
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk with Eryk Salvaggio\n\n\nThe interface of generative AI presents a passive mode of media production\, modeled after the submission of a ticket to a tech stack\, or a request for a chatbot helpdesk. What other modes of interaction might artists engage with to get at these tools beyond the keyboard? In a presentation of selected works\, the artist\, theorist and AI researcher Eryk Salvaggio explores positions\, gestures and attitudes toward AI that reflect its brittle comprehension of creative logic and the world at large. This talk will present works and propose novel workflows that challenge ideas of «generativity» by moving it from the visual senses to the body\, examining video\, performance\, dance\, and puppetry. \nEryk Salvaggio is a researcher and new media artist interested in the social and cultural impacts of artificial intelligence. His work explores the creative misuse of AI and the transformation of archives into datasets for AI training: a practice designed to expose ideologies of tech and to confront the gaps between datasets and the worlds they claim to represent. A blend of hacker\, researcher\, designer and artist\, he has been published in academic journals\, spoken at music and film festivals\, and consulted on tech policy at the national level. He is a researcher on AI\, art and education at the metaLab (at) Harvard University\, the Emerging Technology Research Advisor to the Siegel Family Endowment\, and a fellow and top contributor to Tech Policy Press. He holds an MSc in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics and an MSc in Applied Cybernetics from the Australian National University. \nA cooperation of the DIZH-Bridge Professorship for Digital Cultures and Arts with the Department Fine Arts (DFA) at ZHdK. \nThe event will be held in English. \nVenue: Raum 6.K04 / Zürcher Hochschule der Künste\nPfingstweidstrasse 96\, 8031 Zürich

SUMMARY:Legal Personhood for AI Systems: Lunchtime Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Legal personhood status for non-human agents has been given significant academic attention in recent years. The discussion over robot personality was first formalized at the European Union level in 2017 when policy makers articulated the benefits of legal status for AI systems. Their perspective was that a specific legal status for AI systems would enable them the capacity to compensate for any damage caused by their actions. In response\, the activist-penned «Robotics Open Letter» criticized this view\, noting that AI systems are insufficiently advanced to warrant such a status. The debate has evolved further in the time since this 2017 episode\, with legal and policy scholars adding nuance. \nThe DSI Community AI & Law invites to an interdisciplinary talk by Mr. Karl Reimer (PhD Researcher at UZH Faculty of Philosophy): First\, he will motivate the work and define what is meant by legal personhood from a jurisprudence perspective. Then he will recount Visa A.J. Kurki’s Bundle Theory of Legal Personhood and show how AI systems can hold some – but not all – rights via their agential powers. He will show how such agential powers are correlative to legal authority and rights. Finally\, he will illustrate how his argument would apply to various types of agents such as robots\, while also highlighting differences as compared to traditional human personhood. There will be a chance to ask questions and discuss\, followed by lunch. \nThis lunchtime lecture is open to anyone interested\, but space is limited.\n \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration / Anmeldung: Link \nOrganisation: DSI Community AI & Law \nContact / Kontakt: ai-law@dsi.uzh.ch
